Holly House Receives 'Good' in CQC Inspection

Holly House: CQC Rating ‘Good’

We are delighted to share that Holly House has been rated ‘Good’ across all areas assessed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its recent inspection.

The inspection provides an independent assessment of the quality of care and support at Holly House, looking at areas including people’s experiences, the safety and effectiveness of the service and how well the home is led and managed.

The ‘Good’ rating is a fantastic achievement and one we are very proud of. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the whole Holly House team, from the support provided on to day-to-day basis to the training and leadership that underpin the service.

It also reflects the experiences of the people who live at Holly House and the positive relationships they have built with those supporting them. Whether its support independence, enjoying activities, creating opportunities in the community or achieving personal goals, the team work tirelessly to ensure support is shaped around each individual.

About Holly House

Holly House was Cedar Health and Wellbeing’s very first residential home to open back in 2022. Situated in the community of Rishton, Holly House provides accommodation and individualised, specialist support to six adults diagnosed with Autism and/or Learning Disabilities.

The detached home comprises of six bedrooms, each with their own private en-suite and living area, alongside a shared lounge, kitchen, dining room and garden.

Holly House has been developed to incorporate ‘best practice design’ for supporting adults with Autism. Environmental adaptations have been made to create a bespoke setting, meeting the specifications of each person we support.

The CQC inspection recognised Holly House’s person-centred approach, noting that support was tailored to each person’s needs, preferences and goals. It also highlighted how people are involved in decisions about their care, supporting choice and control in their daily lives.

What is a CQC Inspection?

CQC Inspections are designed to assess the quality and safety of care and support being provided. The assessment considers five key questions: Is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led?

As Cedar Health and Wellbeing support people with Autism and Learning Disabilities, the CQC also assess the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance. This looks at whether people are supported with respect, dignity, equality, choices, independence and good access to the local community.

During the inspection at Holly House, the CQC considered a range of evidence to understand people's experiences and the quality of support being provided. This included speaking with the people we support, relatives and staff, reviewing care records and assessing how the service was managed and how effectively people's individual needs were being met.

What CQC Recognised at Holly House

Holly House was rated ‘Good’ in all five key areas and the inspection also recognised several areas of practice as outstanding, reflecting the work taking place across the home to provide individualised support, create an environment that promotes independence and continually improve outcomes for the people who live there.

A home designed around the people who live there…

“The provider had thoroughly considered the environment people were living in. Adaptations had been undertaken to a very high standard, including ensuring people’s personal space supported them to live the life they chose safely.”

Understanding individual needs…

“Care records were extremely detailed and demonstrated thorough assessments had been undertaken about how to support people’s needs effectively.”

Person-Centred Care…

“The provider was exceptional at making sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs.”

Information supporting communication and choice…

“Information about the service was available to people and staff. People were supported with their communication needs. We observed the use of pictorial aids and information to provide people with prompts and daily goals in their own rooms, and a range of information and guidance was available to the staff team to support care delivery. Staff were seen speaking to people with patience and understanding.”

A culture of learning and improvement…

“The provider focused on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation and local system. They encouraged creative ways of delivering equality of experience, outcome and quality of life for people. They actively contributed to safe, effective practice and research.”

A strong foundation for the future

This is an excellent outcome for Holly House and an important recognition of the quality of support being provided. The CQC report highlights the strong person-centred approach at the home, the individualised environment, the detailed understanding of people’s needs and the ongoing focus on improving people’s quality of life.

While there is plenty to celebrate, the inspection also provides an opportunity to reflect on what is working well and where there is always scope to develop further. Our focus will be on maintaining the areas of practice recognised as exceptional, while continuing to listen, learn and respond to the changing needs of the people who live at Holly House.

We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved at Holly House and look forward to building on this strong foundation as the service continues to develop.
